“Every day is Earth Day”.  Author Unknown

Since the advent of the universe, it has undergone many physical, chemical, structural and environmental changes. Our earth is no exception.Out of all the planets in our solar system, earth’s surface is most actively undergoing land destruction and wear tear. The reasons are it’s atmosphere, and surface water.Erosion and weathering effects most of the surface land, which is due to the environment it consists of.

Scientists declare that continents are drifting away slowly from each other. Then their are the tectonic plate disturbances underneath the earth, which is creating new fault lines every year, resulting in earthquakes. There are seven major and many minor plates that either move closer, farther, or move over each other, resulting in changes on earth’s surface. There is also a rise in volcanic erruptions and activities.Twenty new volcanoes were recorded during the year 2011 only.(Source:Smithsonian Volcanism Global Program).

Solar activities taking place on sun have also largely increased in the past, which has resulted in rising temperatures on earth. The rising ocean temperatures have a direct impact on rainfalls, which have also increased during the past decade, thus causing more floods.Arctic has seen declines in sea ice annually.Antarctic sea ice is larger than arctic in winters, and smaller in summers. This is due to the changes in geoclimatic conditions.Larsen B ice shelf (Antarctic Penninsula), completely dis-integrated in one month only.On the other hand, certain areas have been droughtstruck for long time.Examples are that of Australia, where areas cultivated by crops are merely reduced.

Overall the complete weather cycles have been changed too.Earth has met few of the most violent storms in the recent past. There severity is evident from the death toll devastation and infrastructure losses they curtailed. These include Tsunami’s, Katrina, Andrew, Wilma, so on and so forth.

“Man must feel the earth to know himself and recognize his values…. God made life simple.  It is man who complicates it”.  Charles A. Lindbergh

The Global Biosphere is a collection of all the ecosystems, which support life on earth.Recently many experiments have been conducted to replicate the original functions the biosphere needs to support life in an artificial biosphere, but were unsuccessful. The reasons – Man has started destroying the one and only biosphere…as well as the one and only earth, and there of course is NO REPLACEMENT – NO SPARE!!!

Water on the surface of earth is getting scarce.Examples are the declining water levels in the Lake Powell (Colorado River), shrinking Aral Sea (located between Uzbekistan and Kazakistan), and fluctuating water levels causing floods each year in the Indus River(Pakistan, India, China. It is fed by glaciers on the Karakorum and Himalayas). There is also reduction in natural resources underneath the earth’s surface, being extracted without any future planning.(example is Mountain top mining in Hobert Mine,Boone County, West Virginia, where satellite images show huge growth from edge to edge of the mine, forests around the mine have been wiped out by the mines heavy machinery).Next – the industrial waste is polluting the waters of rivers and seas, poisonous gases contaminating the air we breathe, and on the other hand, people are eating up the oxygen industries of the world aka trees, to get a piece of furniture!!!How THOUGHTFUL!!!Extreme deforestation has effected the Amazon the most.Known for its green thick forests once, satellite pictures reveal that Brazil is the most effected by it.The wildfires going around in different forestations around the world, have also been a significant damage to the  green belts of the world.Recent incident of wildfires took many lives in Australia.

“Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat money. ” Cree Indian Proverb

The harmful fumes emitted by the factories known as CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) are destroying the layer of oxygen molecules or ozone which protects us from the harmful ultra-violet rays. When UV rays come in contact with the CFC in the upper atmosphere, the chlorine atom is released which reacts with ozone molecules to destroy it.In short, 1 molecule of CFC can destroy 100,000 molecules of the ozone.A huge hole in the ozone was reported to have developed around Antarctica in 2011, while it was also reported in the same year, that Chilean capital Santiago is showing increase in its UV index too, causing a slight rise in the number of skin cancer patients recently reported there. If the whole ozone disintegrates, no amount of sun screens can protect us from the debilitating effects of UV, especially Cancers.

“Humankind has not woven the web of life.  We are but one thread within it.  Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.  All things are bound together.  All things connect”. Chief Seattle

This year has already begun with the electromagnetic storms charging towards the earth, during the month of January. These storms occur when the solar wind interacts with the earth’s magnetic field and compresses the earth’s magnetic field. The next UN Climate Change Conference, May 2012 is just around the corner, in Bonn(Germany).Hopes are high that the Kyoto Protocol will be implemented and more and more companies will register to it.2011 was the International year of forests according to the UN, still many trees would have been uprooted this year too.But hopes are that it won’t be the same in the next year. The world aims to celebrate World Environment Day on 5th June 2012, maybe United Nations Environment Program(UNEP) will turn out to be more effective…just plain hopes are the only solutions we have?Well, actually not!

“There is hope if people will begin to awaken that spiritual part of themselves, that heartfelt knowledge that we are caretakers of this planet”.  Brooke Medicine Eagle

Out of all the changes occuring on and around earth, few are natural only. The rest are unfortunately man-made.Man is lavishly using up and wasting earth’s precious resources to it need and will. The point is is it inevitable?Well, i believe the cause does not need our equivocal voices, infact it needs many a more  dedicated individual voices to chant for efforts undertaken for the survival of the earth wholeheartedly, purposefully, with the belief to act as catalysts.

“Till now man has been up against Nature; from now on he will be up against his own nature”.  Dennis Gabor

This Earth Week, which is going on right now, needs me and you, to bring about that change, with self-realization of the impact of our carelessness, laid back attitudes, and apathetic behavior.Earth, which is an incubator to life, needs to sustain in order to protect it.Mankind is blindfolded and slowly drifting towards it’s extinction, God who blessed us with knowledge and exalted us above the rest of the living things on its basis cannot save us, until we make efforts to save ourselves.Let’s meet the demands of this ever changing hostile life support system, and carry the weight of the world on our shoulders, with Strength, and Pride!

Air Supply -The Earth Is:

There’s a man with the smallest of worlds in his hand
And a tear fills his eyes as he tries to hang on
Holding his world together

There’s a girl in the other half of the sky
And she’s wondering why her planet should sigh
Don’t you want me ’round forever

The earth is too small to be divided
Sunrise, moonfall, deep in the heart
A part of everyone

And we can’t wait anymore, the time has come
And those who need something more will feel the sun
We’re sharing one

The earth is too small to be divided
Sunrise, moonfall, deep in the heart
A part of everyone

And we can’t wait anymore, the time has come
You’ve got your foot in the door
Get through somehow, break through somehow

The earth is too small to be divided
Sunrise, moonfall, deep in the heart
A part of everyone
