Our Shades of Grey

‘Human nature is not black and white but black and grey.’     –    Graham Green

Life is never minus these shades of grey.Objects have dark shadows, happiness has sorrow, there are rain clouds hovering over the sun and humans have both virtue and immorality…..so basically life is in 3D – blacks and whites, as well as greys. Why? It is an imperfect world, amalgamation of good and the bad.We start our lives with clean white slates – clear in our minds what is the true purpose of this life blessed upon us.With time, the bad- black shades in our surroundings start taking over, and it becomes hard to resist it’s interference in our radicals, the fundamental ambitions and intentions of our existence slowly start crumbling away.We become more and more uncertain about life and it’s real aims, more and more poisoned by evil than good. What remains then, well it’s only a shade of grey – not what we wanted or aimed for. Most of us are basically grey inside out. Some, maybe a little lighter grey and some a much darker one.I believe this has given rise to a world in a state of chaos and confusion, what we once start believed in in our childhood story morals, and what we were supposed to do is not happening anywhere around us.We are kinda bluffing ourselves.Morals, values, right and wrongs, are all decided upon personal levels, and conveniences.Reminds me of a beautifully sung & written song by Billy Joel – an absolutely favourite song writer, composer and singer.

BILLY JOEL – SHADES OF GREY

Some things were perfectly clear, seen with the vision of youth
No doubts and nothing to fear, I claimed the corner on truth
These days it’s harder to say I know what I’m fighting for
My faith is falling away
I’m not that sure anymore

Shades of grey wherever I go
The more I find out the less that I know
Black and white is how it should be
But shades of grey are the colors I see

Once there were trenches and walls and one point of every view
Fight ’til the other man falls – kill him before he kills you
These days the edges are blurred, I’m old and tired of war
I hear the other man’s words
I’m not that sure anymore

Shades of grey are all that I find
When I look to the enemy line
Black and white was so easy for me
But shades of grey are the colors I see

Now with the wisdom of years, I try to reason things out
And the only people I fear are those who never have doubts
Save us all from arrogant men, and all the causes they’re for
I won’t be righteous again
I’m not that sure anymore

Shades of grey are all that I find
When I look to the enemy line
Ain’t no rainbows shining on me
Shades of grey are the colors I see

Shades of grey wherever I go
The more I find out the less that I know
Ain’t no rainbows shining on me
Shades of grey are the colors I see

Stepping into this deceptive and baffled world, the truths of life become vague. The difference between black and white seems less apparent and obvious. This is not what is expected of us.We usually forget, that we are not in this world to aim for perfection, we are not perfect! Our lives our given in our own hands, because we have all the capacity to turn this shade of grey into somewhat white again. Our tests are within our endurances. If we keep on mixing white into grey in our palettes, one day, this shade of grey will loose the black dark elements we had once absorbed in us.It isn’t easy, needs alot of effort to turn grey to white, trying again and again, bit by bit, adding more and more truth into the dark dungeons of deception, more honesty into our dishonest self, more factual into the depths of fake, and so on and so forth becoming more and more sure about life and it’s objectives, and ultimately making appropriate changes to achieve that life.We can’t be clear about life until our palette is clear. We are expected to turn the greys of our lives back into the pure whites! If not ideally, because nothing is ideal, than at least life will be much much closer to clarity – the clean whites.

‘When you’re the victim of behavior, it’s black and white. When you’re the perpetrator, there are a million shades of gray’   –   Laura Schlessinger

Our lives in the times of today can be clichéd, that we are all dressed up,but have no where to go.There is no purpose in our lives, wandering all over like gypsies, having no destinations or goals. Our shades of grey are the ones creating this cloud of confusions.Finding a meaningful life would be good enough to give directions to our ventures.Every day is a new day, with a clean slate.New beginnings, new opportunities to change ourselves, and this world.Change will begin from everyone who dares to rewrite their lives, who have the strength to turn the tables, those who can outshine the shadows of doubt with the warm bright sunshine of certainty, who can blow away the dark clouds hovering over truth, who can swap grief with joy, who can outclass agony with solace.Only those deserve this world, who have the wisdom to understand it, power to influence and means to change it positively.

‘Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure…than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a grey twilight that knows not victory not defeat.’    –    Theodore Roosevelt

Life would be straightforward, easy and clean once we can tell lie from truth, ignorance from wisdom, love from hatred, man from animal….We have to BELIEVE strongly in what we HAVE to do, before we can actually DO it.We always had the path before us, but it demands a price we are not willing to give. It’s inconvenient, difficult, painful, and doesn’t pay returns as quickly as needed.

‘Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field.I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass the world is too full to talk about.’    –   Rumi

So, we are on a path of self-destruction, which is more convenient – we can make choices as to which route can take us better towards self-destruction.It’s easy because we are unaware of the consequences the times will bring. It is human psychology, we realize the worth of things once they are gone forever. But clocks can never be turned back. The sands of time are slipping out of our hands. Our conscience  is very clear about what it wants. We don’t wanna listen to what it has to say.All our lives we try to turn, a deaf ear to the inner voices which haunt us.We need courage to face it, and to transform our lives positively to achieve inner peace and tranquility.Only our intimidating approach is destroying the values which define our civilization.Until we develop the strength to do what’s right, only shades of grey will roam about this earth!

Words to the wise are enough! At least try….kill or cure!

This could kill you softly:

Shades Of Grey
by Monkees

When the world and I were young, just yesterday
Life was such a simple game a child could play

It was easy then to tell right from wrong
Easy then to tell weak from strong
When a man should stand and fight
Or just go along

But today, there is no day or night
Today, there is no dark or light
Today, there is no black or white
Only shades of gray

I remember when the answer seemed so clear
We had never lived with doubt, or tasted fear

It was easy then to tell truth from lies
Selling out from compromise
Who to love and who to hate
The foolish from the wise

But today, there is no day or night
Today, there is no dark or light
Today, there is no black or white
Only shades of gray

It was easy then to know what was fair
When to keep and when to share
How much to protect your heart
And how much to care

But today, there is no day or night
Today, there is no dark or light
Today, there is no black or white
Only shades of gray
Only shades of gray…

Repent – Show empathy, to YOURSELF!

“Everyone goes astray, but the least imprudent are they who repent the soonest”.    Voltaire

It’s a common practice, many of us live in a pretense world – meaning we hate judging us ourselves, we consider us a superior human,or super human, who can never commit sins or mistakes, especially when others try to make us realize it.Maybe i am one of you guys also.Whenever we are alone, our conscience troubles us with a huge doze of realizations of our capacity to err,and how and when we have taken advantage of it.But believe me gals and guyz, its an indicator of our conscience – that it’s there and alive too!
But this is not enough….we cannot ignore our problem.First of all, to err is human, so don’t be too harsh on yourselves.Secondly, we can carry on in life with a better pace, and with less – heavier hearts and less-stressed brains if we learn to face our setbacks, and rectify our mistakes at the proper time.I know it is tough, gives ur ego a big demotion too, but for long-term satisfaction,it is extremely essential.

An important factor is our false pride. We are boasting everytime everywhere of how fantabulous we are!It develops added social pressures on us in accepting it when we are wrong. We start to enjoy hiding ourselves behind somebody who we really are not.
First of all, we need to stand infront of the mirror, and reiterate to personal selves that this is what we are, and it’s perfectly ok.Once we accept it, and start believing in the new us, next it’s time to say a very precious but difficult word, “Sorry!”
The one who deserves our repent before anyone else, is the Creator Himself. We take everything in this world, and whatever we are blessed with for granted. We consider losing morality once in a while as not a big deal.Morals come from our faith, our societies, and cultures, above all they come from and are made for humanity. Therefore we surpass all, and become rebels considering it our right and thinking we’re really cool.Repent, is not an easy thing, but if we ask for forgiveness from the depths of our hearts, we feel light.

Repent is extremely easy as compared to guilt, and guilt is what we bear until we repent. If we can ever imagine how painful, nerve wreckening guilt is, we will never commit mistakes to acquire it.It’s easier to bear the cries of the devil inside of us, then to face the remorse.Like George Crabbe phrased beautifully:

“To sigh, yet not recede; to grieve, yet not repent”.       George Crabbe

Let us stop being devoid of realisation, let’s make a fresh start today, by trying to repent, from the core of our hearts, we’ll emerge more relieved, positive, and pure. It’s never to late….

Tormented, with all hopes lost
Wailing and accepting defeat
Turn around, stands sorrow
Dark, twining way infront
No one to hold or console
Scorching heat, no shade in sight
No dreams, fears…..only pain
Crossing all barriers of strength
A pure tear of repent rolls down
Falls on the rugged, barren ground
A gust of cool breeze falls from the sky
Gives rise to life within the dead earth
Light fills the sky and the surroundings
Vanishes the woes, buds joy
The destination is visible, path clear
The devine help guides and gives strength
With purity within, no burdens on the heart
The soul embarks on a new journey again
A teardrop vanished the agony
A footstep seeded hope
Countless lie strugling
With a drop of repent!

The Greatest Sarifice

Today, i would like to introduce you all to one of the most inspiring and compassionate person i came across in my life.Utterly dismayed though, for i never got to know who he was! One day, i went out shopping with my uncle. On our way back he said he had to pick something he had given in a repair shop, which was in a small but very busy market. The narrow, winding roads curving here and there reflected desperate faces, a little dismal and sweating, trying hard to sell whatever they had to offer. There were road side tuck shops, hawkers, street sellers and mongers hovering around our car.My uncle parked the car on the roadside and went to pick the stuff from the repairshop.I preferred to wait in the car, because actually i was more interested in the hustled bustled surroundings. There were more pedestrians than traffic because the lane couldn’t cater to heavy vehicles, also people had to park the car and walk, because it was a real narrow street.I started taking a look at the mob around me, surveying their expressions and actions while they were busy shopping. Some were busy bargaining, while some were making there minds about what to buy.Mothers were busy trying to catch a hold of their kiddos which were all over the place, scared they might get lost in the crowd. It really was a busy marketplace, small but had almost everything imaginable to offer.

Right besides our car, on the right was a lane.People were moving to and fro.I was looking at a few kids sharing candies and also fighting over their uneven distribution, when from behind them,i saw a man approaching the main street. He was busy talking to himself, with outbursts of laughter, unaware of the world which was moving on at its own pace.It was evident he had some sort of mental disability, because he had completely torned off all the clothes on him and was roaming around aimlessly, with literally no clothes on him in the cold weather. He was barefooted, with dust in his head, overgrown beard, a middle aged man left on his own.I felt sad, his eyes showed fear, and pain, which he didn’t even knew he was experiencing.I was tormented by his shabby condition. What can make a person loose control of himself to such an extend? What might have happened in his life, so as to make him loose his mind completely?

I was awe struck. This world which was at ease roaming around paying little or no attention towards him, was responsible for his condition. It is a cruel cruel world, which hurts, aches, tortures and plagues and then……then leaves us on our own devices, either to live miserably, which is similar to not living AT ALL, or to die – unwanted, unloved, unconsoled…..like a garbage can set in a corner, or a dog left outside to die of cold and hunger, and yet there he was curbed to living a life worst than an animals, even dogs don’t deserve that?It was miserable!I felt sick!I was guilty, regretful, ASHAMED!I felt so low, that i couldn’t find myself even in the deepest dungeouns of ignorance. His condition made faces at our dignity, it was a disgrace to humanity, and an embarrasement to all those around him.Even more shameful was the fact, that even i was amongst the notorious!I sat there doing nothing!I couldn’t think of what to do!

And then…out of the blue came a sweet exemplary gesture, of an invisible man.A young guy, probably in college, appeared walking on the scene and stopped near him.He seemed to be from a lower middle class family, making the ends meet with lots of effort and hard work.He was dressed in ordinary clothes, and wore sandals in his feet.He stood there observing the shabby condition of the man, as if he also was figuring out or trying to figure out what to do!After a pause, he started taking off his shirt, and next…..i saw him putting it on the mentally disabled! He moved on, dressed only in a tank top in the freezing cold, as humble as he was before, as if nothing happened! I was amazed, glad and embarrased, for not having thought of anything to comfort the ailing soul, not even as little as he did!

I was still not over the goodness of his little compassionate act that i noticed, that the dumb, numb world around him, started to notice something, but unfortunately, it was not the greatness of his compassion, rather a guy roaming about wearing a tank top in the cold weather, which was SOMETHING to laugh about. There were strange, sarcastic looks and smirks, and some even giggled with foolishness. Some can never learn compassion, their conscience is not conscious! No one saw the greatness of a young man, in his act of kindness, there was a message, his act was a mirror which showed us our own ugly faces, and the harshness and insensitivity which has completely overwhelmed us.

No one ever thought that maybe it was the only nice shirt he had, and that the mentally disabled man might have torn that one apart too in another fifteen minutes or so, but he took a small step, of care and concern.Much more could have been done, but never occurred to anyone. We wail over deadly diseases like cancer but we leave those with serious, long term, treatable mental disorders to bear the pain and torment forever!Just because its painstaking and difficult to devote time to such people?Because we are too self absorbed to care about others and we will begin to think about it only once we’ll develop one such disease?

I would wanna leave you all in the end with the goodness of this little deed of compassion, to hang onto, until you yourself gather your strengths to bring about a much bigger one around you!I will also be inspired forever by that gem of a person, and i promise to my heart to feel the emotions of others every time i feel mine!Believe, that there is goodness and good people out there, and till they are world is still worth living in.We need to join hands with them and prove ourselves worthy of being called human!
