Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
An endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
And you its only seed.
It’s the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance.
It’s the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance.
It’s the one who won’t be taken,
Who cannot seem to give,
And the soul afraid of dyin’
That never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun’s love
In the spring becomes the rose.

Don’t give a damn…Give a DIME – Raise your voice…Give them CHOICE!

My recent post about smiling got me thinking, and i checked out a few stats:

Hunger = 925 million people (Recorded:2011)

Multi – dimensional poverty Index(MPI)  =  1.65 billion people 31% of total world population falls within the POVERTY index, MPI is based on three dimensions – education, health and standard of living

50% of the MPI poor people live in South Asia and 29% in Sub-Saharan Africa

The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the 41 Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (567 million people) is less than the wealth of the world’s 7 richest people combined

The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population accounts for 5 percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income

1 child dying every 4 seconds, 14 children dying every minute due to hunger, poverty and lack of health facilities.According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty

Well, alot to smile about!Once in a while, we need to look around us and ponder too. Now, what to do about their smiles???

I wanted to admit one thing here today…i consider my self selfishly and conceitedly responsible for poverty, every second of mine when i am busy raising my kids, there is some losing theirs!!! I am busy deciding what to cook for meal, or which place to dine at, but others have no choice but to embrace hunger, my table is set with plentiful everyday, and others don’t even have a handful! How notorious can we get !Those of us who are NOT POOR, have some or all of what is there’s.Heinous! These stats are heart breaking.Poverty is not a natural calamity, it is no earthquake or tsunami…it’s man-made! It’s inflicted from man to man!!!

“If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin”. Charles Darwin

We have deprived half of us from the basic amenities of life, how can we walk about this earth with our heads held high and with a proud stiff neck???Even animals don’t create barriers between them….cats adopt bunnies, and dogs raise kittens in this world, but we being human have attached stigma to one half of us considering them worse than animals, and of a different species,we can’t help to raise half of humanity? What’s more to it – it’s a pity that i’ll forgot about it the first thing in the morning, and i’ll fill a bowl of cereal as indifferently as ever!!!

“The interesting thing is, while we die of diseases of affluence from eating all these fatty meats, our poor brethren in the developing world die of diseases of poverty, because the land is not used now to grow food grain for their families.”         Jeremy Rifkin

Next – take at look at our priorities at Global level, and how sloppy and how detached we are from one half of the world in our priorities:

Global Priorities (in $U.S. Billions):

Narcotics drugs in the world: 400        Military spending in the world: 780

“People can be so apathetic. They continue to ignore the real people trapped in poverty and homelessness. It’s almost maddening”.        Daphne Zuniga

We neglect the disadvantaged because their voices call us, and ask for something which requires us to forgo our luxuries and pleasures, comforts and desires. The woebegone are locked outside our world, we can’t hear their wails, because we are happy in the world of our own, unstirred. We are creating a group of people who are charged guilty with poverty, and punished with poverty and rejection.

“Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe”.         Frederick Douglass

We have taken away their toungues, sanity, freedom, existence…and we need to wake up our overslept sensitivity on job, and do something about poverty which is becoming a cliche in MODERN society. So much for being modern!

“Resolve not to be poor: whatever you have, spend less. Poverty is a great enemy to human happiness; it certainly destroys liberty, and it makes some virtues impracticable, and others extremely difficult”. Samuel Johnson

Our mindsets needs overhauling too.We can save our bus ticket costs a day per week, when we don’t live far from offices or schools and can take a stroll, and save its in a GIVE AWAYS basket, we can accesss all are needs and desires per month and sacrifice one desire like a movie ticket expense or a spa trip that already wasn’t that necessary and save it in the GIVE AWAY’s.Kids will also follow a similar kindda approach – those who do get pocket money, infact they will learn not to allienate the impoverished and consider them equally viable.I am sure thousands out there are implementing this approach or similar much better ones and are indeed are creditable for their contributions.

“Coming generations will learn equality from poverty, and love from woes.”        Khalil Gibran

Some of us do collect charity in educational institutions concerts or walks, volunteer for this cause, and visit places where poverty rules, and i support them from the bottom of my heart, because i can only sit and cry on my blog and they can actually think and react.

“Do not feel ashamed if the amount of charity is small because to refuse the needy is an act of greater shame”.       Ali ibn Abi Talib

I truly and sincerely believe that this is the minimal that can be done, and THEY are doing it.But actually it’s alot more than that. They are keeping them from dying by buying them food to live on, but they need to start living too.

“There’s only one thing money won’t buy, and that is poverty”.          Joe E. Lewis

A few bucks or dimes CAN buy a day’s meal, but makes them lose their self respect. Poverty is not as cursed than beggary. They are not needy by choice, we can go a step further and try to eliminate poorness by giving them the freedom to choose…choose what kind of life they want to spend, give them opportunities to improve their lives…like i believe food for free education program, where they are asked to study and everyday they are given food for their families, or learn a craft and take away food for your loved ones.

“When I am king, they shall not have bread and shelter only, but also teachings out of books; for a full belly is little worth where the mind is starved.”       Mark Twain (Pauper in the “Prince and the Pauper”)

This got me thinking further, and i read somewhere about the UNITED NATIONS MILLINIUM CAMPAIGN : END POVERTY 2015, too close to end in the literal sense. It’s a global campaign taking place worldwide in many countries to end poverty by implementing the Millenium Development Goals(MDG’s), which during United Nations Millenium Summit in 2000, 189 world leaders promised to implement and make this dream possible. However, with only 5 years left, we lack political will by the leadership in these countries, hence hampering the campaign immensely.According to Wikipedia, Sub Saharan Africa, which is one major area where poverty reins has shown no significant progress in the achievement of the MDG’s.

“By the time this concert ends this evening, 30,000 Africans will have died because of extreme poverty. By this time tomorrow evening, another 30,000. This does not make sense”.            Brad Pitt

The Millennium Declaration signed by 189 countries was as stated below:

We will spare no effort to free our fellow men, women and children from the abject and dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty, to which more than a billion of them are currently subjected.

We can help in the attainment of these goals, which listed below, are all very essential:

1.Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2.Achieve universal primary education
3.Promote gender equality and empower women
4.Reduce child mortality
.Improve maternal health
6.Combat HIV/AIDs, malaria, and other diseases
7.Ensure environmental sustainability
8.Develop a global partnership for development

Every year till 2015 for 3 days events are organized around the world to raise awareness towards the need of this campaign, the event is called STAND UP AND TAKE ACTION.The photostream of the events that have taken place can be viewed on Flickr.

What we bloggers can do?Actually the European Journalism Centre already conducted a bloggers competition called TH!NK ABOUT IT.There were extremely interesting posts developing awareness and calling attention of the political frameworks in these countries. The centre also announced the winners on their site, who will be the site’s reporters. The popular posts can be viewed here, on their site.

CEDITS:unicef

The centre also conducted a photography competition to raise the unfavourable circumstances of people living within the poverty index.Their site adorns the winning photographs, you can take a look here.

What more can be done?We should continue to raise awareness on our blogs because only the people can make MDG’s possible. We cannot let the will of thousand’s die at the hands of a few with no care attitudes.Write about it in your posts, motivate yourself, encourage others to join hands, feel the need of the times.

“Wealthy men can’t live in an island that is encircled by poverty. We all breathe the same air. We must give a chance to everyone, at least a basic chance”.        Ayrton Senna

The poverty struck count on us, we shouldn’t let them down. The needy have every right to be at our place, and we are no special not to go through the trial and tribulations they are facing.

“It is easy enough to say that poverty is no crime. No; if it were men wouldn’t be ashamed of it. It is a blunder, though, and is punished as such. A poor man is despised the whole world over”. Jerome K. Jerome

Expectations are dying, just because world leadership is not serious to share the world with those deprived. The power of the people should outclass poverty and thosewho come in the way of poverty alleviation.

“Poverty wants some, luxury many, and avarice all things.”

Lucius Annaeus Seneca

You can download the campaign’s logo from here.Place in on your blog, and you’ll automatically be a part of the campaign.
